The Afoot in Two Dales Challenge Walk, which takes place in the Yorkshire Dales, is organised by The Irregulars local group of the Long Distance Walkers Association (LDWA).

  • Event Details:
    • Date: Saturday, July 20th to Sunday, July 21st, 2024
    • Start/Finish Location: Harmby Village Hall, Brook Terrace, Leyburn, North Yorkshire, DL8 5PG (Grid Reference: SE128895)
    • Distance / Time Limit:
      • A challenging 50-mile circular route through the iconic Yorkshire Dales.
      • Participants must complete the route within 22 hours.
    • Route Description:
      • The walk covers two of the finest Yorkshire Dales: Wensleydale and Swaledale.
      • It includes footpaths, bridleways, and quiet roads.
      • Notable features:
        • Great Shunner Fell ascent.
        • Scenic views of the dales.
    • Registration:
      • Registration opens at 6:30 AM and closes at 7:45 AM.
      • Limited to 250 entrants.
      • There are no late starts after the sweepers have left.
    • Entry Details:
      • Entry is only via SI Entries; no paper entries or entries on the day.
      • Early Bird rate until the end of January 2024:
        • £30.00 for all participants.
      • From February 1st, 2024:
        • £35.00 for LDWA members.
        • £40.00 for non-LDWA members.
      • Participants must be over 18 years old (no dogs allowed).
    • Included with Entry:
      • Tea and toast at registration.
      • Refreshments at checkpoints.
      • Meal at the finish.
      • Finisher certificate.
      • Showers and changing facilities are available.
    • Route & Checkpoints:
      • Harmby – Redmire – Haverdale – Muker – Great Shunner – Hardraw – Bainbridge – Thoralby – West Witton – Harmby.
    • Equipment:
      • Suggested kit list (weather-dependent):
        • Suitable footwear.
        • Waterproofs (top & trousers) and spare fleece.
        • Compass, whistle, torch (with spare batteries), and emergency bivvy bag (not foil blanket).
        • Food.
      • Navigational skills are required for night-time walking over open moorland.
      • Participants should bring a mug.
